The Frontier in American History: (1921) By: Frederick Jackson Turner

The Frontier in American History was published in 1921 as a collection of essays that cemented the influence of Frederick Jackson Turner’s seminal 1893 paper, The Significance of the Frontier in American History. Turner, a historian at the University of Wisconsin and later Harvard, sought to move American historiography away from its heavy focus on European origins and toward the unique sociological and democratic forces shaped by the westward expansion of the American frontier.

The design of the original volume reflects the academic standards of early 20th-century American intellectual publishing, characterized by restrained typography and durable cloth binding. The collection was received as a foundational text in the field, though its central thesis—that the frontier was the primary driver of American individualism and democratic spirit—became a subject of significant debate and refinement among historians throughout the 20th century.
