The Frontier in American History

Frederick Jackson Turner originally presented his thesis, The Significance of the Frontier in American History, as a paper at the 1893 meeting of the American Historical Association. It was later compiled into this foundational collection of essays, which explores the idea that the American character was uniquely shaped by the westward movement of the frontier. By analyzing the interaction between European settlers and the rugged conditions of the American West, Turner argued that the process of colonization fostered democratic institutions and a distinct individualistic spirit in the United States.

The collection remains one of the most influential works in American historiography, though it has faced significant scholarly re-evaluation in the decades since its publication. Critics and contemporary historians have pointed out its omission of the displacement of Indigenous populations and its narrow focus on male settlers. Despite these critiques, the work remains essential for understanding how early twentieth-century scholars conceptualized the development of American identity and the country's national mythology.
