The Frontier in American History

Frederick Jackson Turner originally presented his thesis, The Significance of the Frontier in American History, as a paper at the 1893 American Historical Association meeting in Chicago. The work argued that the movement westward and the presence of the frontier was the primary factor in shaping American character and democracy, moving the focus of historical study away from European influences. The full volume, compiling his essays on the topic, was published in 1920 to codify his arguments for a wider academic audience.

The book remains one of the most influential and debated texts in American historiography. While Turner’s frontier thesis was widely accepted for decades as the definitive explanation for American development, later historians have critiqued his disregard for the experiences of Indigenous peoples and the social complexities of the regions he analyzed. Today, the text is regarded as a foundational, if controversial, piece of literature essential for understanding how early 20th-century scholars conceptualized the American national identity.
