The Novels of Charles Lever: Roland Cashel; with illus. by Phiz

Roland Cashel was serialized between 1848 and 1849 before being published as a complete volume. Charles Lever, an Irish novelist known for his picaresque and military-themed stories, intended this work to depart from his earlier slapstick style by incorporating a more serious, plot-driven mystery centered on wealth and identity. Set against a backdrop of global travel and social intrigue, the novel reflects the mid-Victorian fascination with the complexities of legacy and inheritance.

The illustrations were provided by Hablot Knight Browne, widely known by his pseudonym Phiz, who was the definitive artistic collaborator for both Charles Dickens and Charles Lever. Phiz used etching techniques to capture the dramatic, often turbulent nature of Lever's characters, ensuring his visual interpretations became inseparable from the author's narrative voice. Contemporary readers valued the collaboration for its ability to enliven the dense, episodic prose typical of the period's monthly part-issues.
