The Novels of Charles Lever: Roland Cashel; with illus. by Phiz

Roland Cashel was originally serialized between 1848 and 1849, marking a significant entry in Charles Lever's prolific career as an Irish novelist. Written during a period of transition in Lever's style, the work explores themes of international travel and social ambition, reflecting the author’s own experiences living abroad in Europe. The novel was conceived to cater to the mid-Victorian appetite for picaresque adventure, providing readers with a sprawling narrative characterized by complex character dynamics and intricate plotting.

The illustrations for this volume were provided by Hablot Knight Browne, better known by his pseudonym 'Phiz,' who was perhaps the most iconic artistic collaborator of the era. Browne was tasked with capturing the energy and varying tones of Lever’s prose, utilizing his signature etched style to bring the protagonist's escapades to life. His work was highly regarded by contemporary critics for its ability to balance caricature with dramatic intensity, helping to solidify the visual identity of Lever’s novels in the eyes of 19th-century readers.
