Ultra Ninja Scroll

Ultra Ninja Scroll, known in Japan as Ninkū, was created by mangaka Kazuhiko Midou and originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump during the early 1990s. The series emerged during a period when martial arts and historical fiction were highly popular in shonen manga, blending traditional ninja tropes with exaggerated, comedic character designs and supernatural abilities. It was conceived as a parody-adjacent take on the genre, focusing on the journey of the protagonist, Fuusuke, as he navigates a world recovering from a great war.

The aesthetic of the series is defined by Midou's distinct, soft-edged art style, which prioritized expressive, almost cartoonish character dynamics over the gritty realism found in other period dramas of the time. Upon its release, the manga was well-received for its lighthearted tone and kinetic action sequences, eventually spawning a successful television anime adaptation and several video games. The volumes remain noted by collectors for capturing a specific moment of transition in 1990s Japanese manga, where creators began to deconstruct established tropes through humor.
