Where it came from
Ura Kyouto is an experimental manga series authored by Yumeya that navigates the intersection of urban folklore and psychological horror. Emerging from the independent underground scene, the work was conceived as a departure from mainstream narrative structures, focusing instead on the atmospheric unease of a hidden, shadow version of Kyoto. The series utilizes a dense, surreal visual style to mirror the protagonist's descent into an uncanny realm where history and hallucination blur.
The design of the volume reflects a minimalist aesthetic, often featuring high-contrast imagery that emphasizes the fragmented nature of its narrative. Yumeya’s artistic approach was intended to evoke the sensation of reading a discovered diary or a forgotten historical record, deliberately eschewing clarity in favor of mood. Upon its release, the work was noted by critics for its ambitious thematic depth and its resistance to easy categorization, solidifying its place as a cult piece within the niche horror-manga genre.
