Where it came from
Urakata!! was created by Bisco Hatori, a mangaka widely recognized for her previous success with Ouran High School Host Club. Published in the magazine LaLa, the series centers on a college student who finds himself recruited into a university club focused on historical reenactment and costume making. Hatori designed the narrative to explore the meticulous, often overlooked craftsmanship behind theatrical and historical presentation, moving away from the romantic tropes of her earlier work to focus on the camaraderie of a niche hobbyist community.
The series is characterized by Hatori's signature clean, expressive art style and a penchant for lighthearted, character-driven humor. It received a generally warm reception from fans of josei and shojo manga who appreciated her shift toward a more grounded, episodic format. While it did not reach the global cultural ubiquity of her debut series, it remains a respected title within Hatori's body of work for its detailed depiction of costume design and the specific social dynamics of university clubs in Japan.
