Werke: Nationalausgabe. Im Auftrag Des Goethe- und Schiller-Archivs, Des Schiller-Nationalmuseums und Der Deutschen Akademie

The Nationalausgabe of Friedrich Schiller’s works is a monumental scholarly undertaking initiated in the mid-20th century to provide a comprehensive and definitive critical edition of the poet’s writings. Commissioned by the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv and the Schiller-Nationalmuseum, this project represents the pinnacle of German philological rigor, aiming to consolidate scattered manuscripts, correspondence, and varying editions into a cohesive, reliable textual source for researchers and scholars globally.

The design and editorial philosophy behind this series reflect a commitment to historical-critical standards that defined post-war German literary studies. By meticulously tracking the evolution of Schiller’s drafts and providing extensive commentary, the editors intended to strip away the accretions of earlier, less accurate editions. Since its inception, the collection has been regarded as the standard reference work for Schillerian scholarship, praised for its exhaustive academic depth and its role in preserving the intellectual legacy of Weimar Classicism.
