Where it came from
Released in late 2022 as part of the Paramount War expansion for the One Piece Card Game, this card depicts Sakazuki, also known as Akainu, in his role as a Marine Admiral. The set was designed to capture the intensity of the Marineford Arc, a pivotal storyline where the Navy confronts the Whitebeard Pirates. The alternate art version serves as a premium collector's piece, replacing standard photography or promotional imagery with a stylized, high-contrast illustration that emphasizes the character's Magma-Magma fruit powers.
The artistic direction for the Paramount War set focused on dynamic, character-focused portraits to distinguish high-rarity cards from the base set. By utilizing bold lines and thematic color palettes, the illustrators aimed to reflect the brutal authority Sakazuki commands within the series lore. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players and collectors alike, becoming a sought-after staple in black-color decks due to its powerful board-clearing effects and its striking visual presence.
