Where it came from
Dark Gyarados was released as part of the Team Rocket Returns expansion, which debuted in the TCG in 2004. This set served as a thematic sequel to the original Team Rocket series, focusing on the villainous organization's corrupted Pokémon. The cards were designed to highlight the 'Dark' aesthetic, which mechanically granted Pokémon different abilities or attacks to reflect their integration into Team Rocket's operations.
The artwork for this specific card, number 36/109, was rendered by Ken Sugimori, whose iconic style has defined the Pokémon franchise since its inception. Sugimori sought to depict the intimidating, aggressive nature of Gyarados through a dynamic pose that emphasized its destructive potential. At the time of release, the card was well-regarded by players for its balance and by collectors for its role in expanding the lore of the Team Rocket narrative arc.
