What it does
When Dark Gyarados is Knocked Out by an attack, flip a coin. If heads, this power does 20 damage for each Water Energy attached to Dark Gyarados to the Pokémon that Knocked Out Dark Gyarados. Apply Weakness and Resistance. This power doesn't work if Dark Gyarados is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Paralyzed.
Normally found only in the deep ocean, it has recently been seen in shallow waters as well.

Where it came from
The Dark Gyarados card was released in 2000 as part of the Team Rocket expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set marked a significant shift in the game's narrative, introducing the 'Dark' Pokémon concept, which depicted creatures under the influence of the villainous Team Rocket organization. The design shift moved away from the bright, heroic aesthetic of the base sets toward a more aggressive, shadowed visual style intended to appeal to a slightly more mature demographic of players.
The artwork for this card was provided by Ken Sugimori, one of the primary illustrators and character designers for the Pokémon franchise. His interpretation of the Gyarados features the creature in a turbulent, menacing pose, emphasizing the darker thematic shift of the expansion. Upon its release, the set was well-received by the player base for introducing complex game mechanics, and the rare Dark Gyarados specifically became a staple in early competitive decks due to its 'Final Beam' attack.
