What it does
When Dark Gyarados is Knocked Out by an attack, flip a coin. If heads, this power does 20 damage for each Water Energy attached to Dark Gyarados to the Pokémon that Knocked Out Dark Gyarados. Apply Weakness and Resistance. This power doesn't work if Dark Gyarados is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Paralyzed.
Normally found only in the deep ocean, it has recently been seen in shallow waters as well.

Where it came from
The Dark Gyarados card was released in the 2000 Team Rocket expansion, which marked the first time the Pokémon Trading Card Game introduced the 'Dark' mechanic. This set was designed to reflect the influence of the villainous Team Rocket organization within the game's lore, shifting the aesthetic toward a grittier, more aggressive tone that departed from the brighter illustrations found in the base sets.
The artwork was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator for the early Pokémon franchise. Sugimori utilized a distinctive, moody style for this card to emphasize the intimidating nature of the Dark evolution. Upon its release, the card was widely celebrated by collectors for its imposing visual design and remains a hallmark of the early expansion era for its role in expanding the strategic depth of the game.
