What it does
When Dark Gyarados is Knocked Out by an attack, flip a coin. If heads, this power does 20 damage for each Water Energy attached to Dark Gyarados to the Pokémon that Knocked Out Dark Gyarados. Apply Weakness and Resistance. This power doesn't work if Dark Gyarados is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Paralyzed.
Normally found only in the deep ocean, it has recently been seen in shallow waters as well.

Where it came from
Dark Gyarados was originally released in the 2000 Neo Destiny expansion, a set that introduced the 'Dark' mechanic to the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This mechanic represented specific Pokémon that had been corrupted or altered by Team Rocket, shifting their aesthetic toward a more aggressive, shadowed appearance. The original card was illustrated by Atsuko Nishida, who leaned into the dark, fierce nature of the creature to distinguish it from the standard Gyarados cards found in earlier Base Set expansions.
The 2021 release of this card in the Celebrations: Classic Collection was created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise. It functions as a near-exact replica of the 2000 original, retaining the vintage card layout and Nishida’s artwork, though it features a specialized 25th-anniversary stamp. The reissue was well-received by fans for its nostalgic design, serving as an accessible way for collectors to acquire a piece of TCG history while maintaining the visual integrity of the original Neo Destiny release.
