Dark Venusaur

The Dark Venusaur card was released in 2003 as part of the Best of Game subset, a promotional series distributed primarily through the Pokémon Organized Play program. This set was designed to collect some of the most powerful and iconic cards from the earlier e-Card series, providing players with competitive staples that had previously been difficult to acquire. The card features a distinct layout, retaining the dark-type aesthetic of the original Team Rocket expansion while incorporating the refined mechanics of the Wizards of the Coast era.

The artwork for this particular iteration of Venusaur captures the darker, more aggressive character design synonymous with the Team Rocket narrative introduced in the early 2000s. While it maintains the classic composition of the original Base Set Venusaur, the illustration emphasizes the creature's connection to shadow, a common design motif of that period meant to differentiate these variants from their standard counterparts. It remains a notable piece for collectors interested in the transition period of the Pokémon Trading Card Game before the transition to Nintendo-led production.
