Where it came from
Rocket's Mewtwo was originally released as part of the Japanese Pokémon Card Game expansion, Gym Heroes, before being featured in the Best of Game set. This set was curated by Wizards of the Coast for the North American market to highlight top-performing competitive cards from the early years of the game. It served as a retrospective of the powerful cards that defined the tournament scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator for the franchise, known for his clean, iconic character designs. Sugimori’s portrayal of this iteration of Mewtwo emphasizes the darker, more aggressive aesthetic associated with Team Rocket's experiments, providing a thematic departure from the standard legendary Pokémon cards of the era. Upon its release, it was highly sought after by players for its tactical utility and remains a staple for collectors of the Best of Game series.
