Where it came from
The Darkrai card, numbered 4/106, was released in the 2008 Great Encounters expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set drew heavily from the fourth generation of Pokémon, focusing on the Sinnoh region and the introduction of mythical Pokémon. Darkrai, a dark-type creature known for its connection to nightmares, was a central figure in the cinematic release of 'The Rise of Darkrai' around that period, making this card a significant piece of merchandise for collectors of the era.
The artwork for this Holo-Rare card features the signature illustrative style common to the Diamond and Pearl series, emphasizing bold colors and dynamic poses. It was designed to highlight Darkrai's eerie aesthetic, effectively capturing its shadow-based lore. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its 'Darkness Sleep' Poké-Power and 'Sleep Hole' attack, which integrated the theme of slumber into its mechanical gameplay, securing its status as a staple for deck-builders during the 2008 competitive season.
