Where it came from
The Groudon ex card, numbered 002 in the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, was released in 2003 as part of the transition of the Pokémon Trading Card Game license from Wizards of the Coast to The Pokémon Company International. These promotional cards were typically distributed through organized play events, retail partnerships, or specific hobby magazines to build momentum for the Ruby and Sapphire generation of gameplay mechanics.
The card features artwork by Hajime Kusajima, who captured the legendary Pokémon's imposing nature with the bold lines and dynamic shading characteristic of the early ex-series aesthetic. By introducing the 'ex' mechanic, the design focused on higher hit points and more powerful attacks, which shifted the competitive landscape of the game at the time and cemented Groudon's status as a staple for high-damage deck archetypes.
