Where it came from
Released in 2005 as part of the Nintendo Black Star Promos set, Groudon ex (38/40) served as a promotional tie-in for the third generation of the Pokémon franchise. These cards were typically distributed through organized play events or specific retail initiatives to promote the GBA-era games, such as Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. By featuring a Legendary Pokémon in the 'ex' mechanic, which was introduced in the EX series, the card offered players a powerful, high-HP option for the competitive trading card game landscape of the mid-2000s.
The card features the signature illustration style of the EX era, emphasizing the massive, terrestrial nature of Groudon through dynamic framing and metallic-style borders. This design was part of an effort to make 'ex' cards feel distinct and prestigious compared to standard releases. The card was well-received by players for its 'Crushing Burn' and 'Spiral Blast' attacks, which leveraged the fighting-type mechanics common to the Groudon lineage, cementing its status as both a functional tool for competitive decks and a collectible memento of the Ruby and Sapphire era.
