Where it came from
The Kyogre ex card, numbered 37/40 in the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, was released in 2004 as part of the promotional support for the third generation of the Pokémon franchise. It was distributed specifically as a participation prize for the Pokémon Summer 2004 TCG challenge events held in North America, acting as a bridge between the core sets and the ongoing competitive season. This release served to introduce the 'ex' mechanic—which featured Pokémon with significantly higher HP and powerful attacks—to a broader audience beyond the main expansions.
The card’s design reflects the early aesthetic of the EX series, characterized by the use of holofoil borders and an unconventional, stylized artwork style that departed from the traditional Ken Sugimori illustrations found in earlier base sets. Illustrated by Ryo Ueda, the artwork captures the legendary Pokémon in a dynamic, surging pose designed to emphasize its status as a powerful Water-type entity. It was received positively by competitive players of the time, who valued the card for its specific 'High Tide' attack, which allowed for efficient energy manipulation within water-themed decks.
