Where it came from
Tropical Tidal Wave was released as card number 36 in the Nintendo Black Star Promos set, a collection of promotional cards distributed primarily through organized play events in the early 2000s. It was designed as a specialized 'Stadium' card for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, intended to be used as a prize for participants in the 2004 Pokémon World Championships, making it a highly sought-after piece of tournament-exclusive memorabilia.
The card features artwork by illustrator Kouki Saitou, who is well-regarded in the Pokémon TCG community for his vibrant and dynamic style. By depicting a serene yet powerful tropical scene, the design reflects the exotic locations often chosen for high-level competitive tournaments of that era. Its reception was defined by its utility in competitive play, where its unique effect allowed players to refresh their hands, cementing its status as a functional treasure for both players and serious collectors.
