Provenance

Where it came from

Released in early 2000, Base Set 2 was designed as a comprehensive re-release of the original Base Set and Jungle expansions. It served as a tactical bridge for players and collectors, consolidating some of the most sought-after illustrations from the game's initial launch into a single, cohesive set for a market that was experiencing rapid growth and a scarcity of earlier cards.

The artwork for this Magmar was originally created by Ken Sugimori, whose distinctive, clean style defined the early visual identity of the Pokémon franchise. While the card retains the classic Sugimori aesthetic, the shift to a two-star rarity symbol reflects the set's role in restructuring the game's accessibility, presenting these foundational fire-type creatures with updated set numbering and the signature Base Set 2 design template.
