Provenance

Where it came from

The Mudkip card (59/109) was released in 2003 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Ruby & Sapphire expansion. This set marked a significant transition for the TCG, as it was the first to be published by The Pokémon Company International following the transfer of rights from Wizards of the Coast. The introduction of Mudkip, one of the three starter Pokémon from the Hoenn region, coincided with the launch of the third generation of video games on the Game Boy Advance.

The artwork for this card was created by Ken Sugimori, the lead designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for this era favored clean lines and a focus on the creature's canonical anatomy, intended to ground the new generation in the established aesthetic of the series. As a common card, it was designed to be accessible to players during the transition into the EX-era mechanics, serving as a foundational water-type option for deck building.
