Where it came from
The Mudkip card, numbered 5/40 in the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, was released in 2003 as a promotional tie-in for the launch of the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire video games on the Game Boy Advance. This card was distributed primarily through the Pokémon Center in New York and select events, marking the introduction of the Hoenn region starters to the trading card game community during the transition from the Wizards of the Coast era to Nintendo's direct management.
The artwork for this card features the signature illustrative style of Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the franchise. His goal was to capture the distinct, endearing personality of Mudkip, highlighting its aquatic nature and the grounded, practical design aesthetic that defined the third generation of Pokémon. It was received as a sought-after collectible by players looking to complete their early Hoenn-era sets and remains a nostalgic piece for those who started their journey with the Ruby and Sapphire titles.
