Provenance

Where it came from

The Mudkip card from the EX Dragon expansion was released in 2003 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set marked a significant transition in the game's mechanics, introducing the EX series era which emphasized powerful Pokémon-ex cards and a shift toward more modern, stylized illustrations. Mudkip, the water-type starter from the Hoenn region introduced in the Ruby and Sapphire video games, was featured here to capitalize on the popularity of the third generation of Pokémon.

The artwork for this particular card was produced by illustrator Atsuko Nishida. Nishida is well known within the community for her pivotal role in character design for the franchise, including the creation of Pikachu. Her approach to this card aimed to capture Mudkip's playful and recognizable persona in a simple, accessible pose, reflecting the card's status as a common-rarity entry meant to familiarize players with the new generation of creatures.
