Where it came from
Mystery Plate α was released in 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set is historically significant as the final expansion produced by Wizards of the Coast before Nintendo and The Pokémon Company International took over full publishing duties. It stands as a landmark of the E-Card era, featuring distinct layouts designed to be scanned by the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral to unlock game data or minigames.
The aesthetic of the card reflects the transitionary period of the early 2000s, utilizing the work of various artists commissioned by Creatures Inc. Mystery Plate α, alongside its counterpart Mystery Plate β, was designed with a minimalist, abstract visual style that diverged from the typical creature-focused illustrations of the time. Upon release, the set was noted by collectors for its limited distribution and the technical complexity of its e-Reader features, eventually becoming one of the most sought-after sets from the early English-language run of the game.
