Where it came from
Released in 2000, the Base Set 2 expansion served as a compilation set for the burgeoning Pokémon Trading Card Game, designed to keep essential cards in circulation for players after the initial Base Set and Jungle expansions began to rotate or sell out. By combining reprints from the first two sets into one cohesive collection, Wizards of the Coast ensured that foundational Trainer cards remained accessible to new players joining the hobby at the turn of the millennium.
The Switch card itself is a quintessential piece of TCG utility, featuring simple, functional artwork typical of early card design. It was illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi, who contributed heavily to the visual identity of the early sets. The design focused on clarity and ease of use for gameplay, reflecting the game's broader mission to bridge the gap between collectors and competitive players by providing a reliable way to maneuver active creatures in the arena.
