Where it came from
Thundurus (070/197) was released in the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Obsidian Flames, which debuted in the summer of 2023. As part of the Scarlet & Violet series, this set focused on the phenomenon of Tera Pokémon, introducing type-shifted versions of familiar creatures to the competitive meta. The card serves as a standard rare, grounding the high-energy aesthetics of the set with a traditional illustration that highlights the Legendary Pokémon's storm-cloud motifs.
The artwork for this specific card continues the design lineage of the Forces of Nature trio, emphasizing the electric and turbulent energy associated with the character. Illustrators for the Pokémon TCG during the Scarlet & Violet era frequently employ dynamic, high-contrast backgrounds to suit the energetic nature of the game’s expanded mechanics. This card was designed for consistency within the Obsidian Flames set structure, intended to provide players with a reliable Electric-type attacker while maintaining the aesthetic continuity of the Generation V mascot.
