Where it came from
Released in 1984 under the Abbey label, this recording features the Choir of St George's Chapel performing a selection of traditional Christmas carols. The chapel, located within the grounds of Windsor Castle, is renowned for its long-standing musical tradition and the exceptional acoustic environment provided by its historic stone architecture. Directed by Christopher Robinson, the choir was captured alongside organist John Porter to preserve the specific liturgical style synonymous with the Chapel's daily services.
The production was intended to document the authentic, austere sound of a collegiate choir within the Royal Peculiar setting of St George's. By the 1980s, the Abbey label was noted for documenting British cathedral and choral music with an emphasis on clarity and atmosphere. The recording was well-regarded by listeners seeking a traditional approach to the holiday repertoire, favored for its lack of modern artifice and its dedication to the sacred, contemplative nature of the carols performed in the historic chapel space.
