Where it came from
Released in 1980 by the independent label Abbey, this compilation serves as a comprehensive survey of the English choral tradition. The collection was designed to capture the distinct acoustic signatures of eleven different cathedral and collegiate choirs, moving beyond the sound of a single ensemble to showcase the breadth of ecclesiastical music across the United Kingdom. It represents the label's focus on high-fidelity recordings of liturgical music, intended for listeners seeking an authentic, devotional atmosphere during the holiday season.
The album reflects the era's appreciation for the refined, restrained style of the Anglican choral repertoire, which had become increasingly popular in recording catalogs throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The curation highlights the precision of various established choirs, aiming to document their technical proficiency in delivering standard seasonal works. As part of Abbey's catalog, it is recognized by record collectors as a quintessential example of mid-century British choral documentation, favored for its traditional approach to arrangement and performance.
