Where it came from
A Dorna was released in 1983 by the Galician ensemble Grupo de Habaneras Alecrín under the Citola label. The album emerged during a period of cultural resurgence in Galicia, where traditional musical forms like the habanera—a genre with roots in Cuban maritime trade—were being revitalized to preserve regional identity and local seafaring history.
The recording captures the lyrical, melancholic sound characteristic of the group, which emphasizes vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements typical of the coastal tradition. As part of Citola’s catalog, the release functioned as a vessel for documenting the oral histories and nautical songs of the Galician coast, finding an audience among those invested in regional folk preservation and the ethnomusicology of the Atlantic maritime tradition.
