Bluebeard's Castle / Le Chateau De Barbe-Bleue / Herzog Blaubarts Burg

Released in 1977 on the CBS Masterworks label, this recording of Béla Bartók’s 1911 opera Bluebeard’s Castle represents a significant collaboration between conductor Pierre Boulez and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The production was part of Boulez’s broader effort to bring his analytical, precision-focused approach to 20th-century orchestral masterpieces. By capturing the work in a studio setting, the team aimed to emphasize the stark, psychological intensity of the libretto, which explores themes of isolation and the metaphorical darkness within human relationships.

The recording features mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos as Judith and bass-baritone Siegmund Nimsgern as Bluebeard, two performers known for their dramatic versatility. Critics of the era generally lauded the release for its clarity and the technical fidelity of the orchestral textures, which Boulez meticulously balanced to ensure the dense, post-romantic instrumentation did not overwhelm the vocalists. It remains a hallmark of 1970s operatic recording history, representing a bridge between traditional mid-century interpretations and the more modernist sensibilities Boulez championed throughout his career.
