Bluebeard's Castle = Le Chateau De Barbe-Bleue = Herzog Blaubarts Burg

Béla Bartók composed this one-act expressionist opera in 1911, though it was not premiered until 1918. It stands as a pivotal work of 20th-century modernism, drawing heavily on symbolist aesthetics and psychological depth. This 1976 recording was produced by CBS Masterworks as part of an effort to bring definitive performances of Bartók’s major stage works to a wider audience through the lens of modern, precise orchestral interpretation.

Conductor Pierre Boulez brings a characteristic analytical rigor to this production, stripping away the romantic excesses often associated with earlier interpretations of the score. Tatiana Troyanos and Siegmund Nimsgern were selected for their ability to navigate the complex, often dissonant vocal lines with clarity. The album received significant critical attention upon its release, widely praised by critics for its balance of sonic clarity and the dark, claustrophobic atmosphere essential to the opera’s narrative.
