Bluebeard's Castle = Le Chateau De Barbe-Bleue = Herzog Blaubarts Burg

This 1976 recording of Béla Bartók’s sole opera, Bluebeard's Castle, represents a significant collaboration between conductor Pierre Boulez and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Captured for CBS Masterworks, the production was intended to showcase Boulez’s precise, analytical approach to 20th-century modernism, stripping away late-romantic sentimentality to highlight the intricate, shifting colors of Bartók’s orchestrations. It stands as a definitive document of the era's interpretative shift toward structural clarity in operatic performance.

The performance features Tatiana Troyanos as Judith and Siegmund Nimsgern as Bluebeard, a casting choice that emphasized the psychological intensity of the work’s symbolic narrative. Upon release, the recording was met with considerable critical acclaim for its sonic balance and the vocal depth of its leads. It has since remained a cornerstone of the Bartók discography, frequently cited by musicologists and critics as a primary reference point for the work's dense, symbolic musical language.
