The Carmen Suite is a vibrant reimagining of Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, composed by Rodion Shchedrin in 1967. Commissioned for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, Shchedrin rearranged the original score for a percussion ensemble and strings. The work strips away the traditional orchestral lushness to emphasize the sharp, rhythmic drama of the narrative, resulting in a modernist ballet suite that was initially met with resistance by Soviet officials who felt the orchestration was overly iconoclastic.
