Carmen-Suite

The Carmen Suite is a vibrant reimagining of Georges Bizet's opera, composed in 1967 by Rodion Shchedrin for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Shchedrin sought to strip away the grand orchestration of the original opera, opting instead for a leaner arrangement featuring only strings and a vast array of percussion instruments. This bold interpretation was designed to emphasize the sharp, percussive rhythms of flamenco and the dramatic tension inherent in the narrative, creating a visceral experience that deviates significantly from the traditional operatic suite.

This particular release from the Shinsekai Record label, catalog number SMK-7550, showcases the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra under the dynamic baton of Gennadi Rozhdestvensky. By the time this pressing reached audiences, the work had gained international acclaim for its unconventional brilliance and structural ingenuity. Critics at the time praised the recording for its high-fidelity capture of the complex percussion section and the precision of the Bolshoi players, who managed to bring a modern, kinetic energy to music that was already a staple of the classical canon.
