Carmen-Suite

The Musical Masterpiece Society was established in the early 1950s as a mail-order subscription service, aiming to bring high-quality classical music to a wider audience at a time when record collections were becoming an increasingly popular domestic pursuit. The MMS-96 release, featuring Georges Bizet's Carmen-Suite, was produced during this mid-century push to democratize symphonic music, offering accessible interpretations of core repertoire recorded with competent European ensembles like the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest.

Walter Goehr, a versatile conductor known for his work in both film scoring and classical concertizing, led these sessions to provide a polished and spirited reading of Bizet's evocative score. The design of these early Musical Masterpiece Society discs typically favored utilitarian, clean aesthetic treatments that prioritized the identification of the composer and the specific suite over ornate flourishes, reflecting the label's focus on musical literacy and home enjoyment for the post-war listener.
