Carmen-Suite

The Carmen Suite is a ballet in one act, famously orchestrated by Rodion Shchedrin in 1967 as a transcription of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. Written at the behest of his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, Shchedrin sought to distill the dramatic intensity of the opera into a virtuosic chamber arrangement for strings and percussion. The work emerged from the Soviet era's vibrant cultural landscape, where reinterpreting Western classics through a modernist, rhythmic lens became a hallmark of Shchedrin's creative output.

This specific 1988 pressing, released on the East German ETERNA label, features a recording by Vladimir Spivakov and the Moscow Virtuosi alongside the Chamber Ensemble of Armenia. Spivakov, renowned for his refined musicianship, brings a sharp, lean precision to the percussion-heavy score, emphasizing the angularity and wit of Shchedrin's orchestration. The ETERNA release remains a highly regarded document of late-Soviet classical production, recognized for its acoustic clarity and the distinctive, tight ensemble playing that defined the Moscow Virtuosi's aesthetic during that period.
