Кармен-сюита = Carmen-suite

The Carmen Suite was conceived in 1967 as a collaborative project between the composer Rodion Shchedrin and his wife, the legendary prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Originally intended as a score for a one-act ballet, Shchedrin reimagined Bizet’s iconic opera melodies for a unique ensemble consisting solely of strings and a vast array of percussion. The work was commissioned to provide a fresh, modern interpretative layer to the classic narrative, stripping away the original vocal lines to emphasize rhythmic intensity and dramatic tension.

The recording by the String Ensemble of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, released on the Melodiya label, captures the definitive interpretation of this avant-garde arrangement. The design of this release often reflects the austere, modernist aesthetic favored by state-run Soviet record production during the late 1960s. Upon its debut, the suite sparked significant debate regarding the modernization of classical themes, yet it ultimately became one of the most enduring and frequently performed orchestral works of the late 20th century, celebrated for its bold orchestration and emotional potency.
