Кармен-сюита = Carmen-suite

The Carmen-Suite is a compelling transcription of themes from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen, reimagined by Soviet composer Rodion Shchedrin in 1967. Written specifically for his wife, the legendary prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, the work was commissioned for a ballet production at the Bolshoi Theatre. Shchedrin opted for an unconventional instrumentation, utilizing only strings and a vast array of percussion, which creates a shimmering, modern texture that strips the familiar melodies of their original operatic weight to emphasize rhythmic drive and dramatic flair.

This specific Melodiya pressing features the string section of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, capturing the intense, visceral sound of the ensemble that premiered the work. The recording remains a significant artifact of mid-century Soviet cultural output, reflecting a period where classical traditions were frequently re-interpreted through avant-garde sensibilities. Upon its release, the suite was met with both acclaim for its technical ingenuity and some scrutiny from traditionalists, though it ultimately secured its place as a staple of the global concert repertoire and a highlight of the Melodiya catalog.
