Where it came from
The Carmen Suite is a unique musical adaptation commissioned by the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya in 1967. Composed by Rodion Shchedrin, the work reinterprets Georges Bizet’s iconic opera themes for strings and percussion. It was conceived as a ballet score designed to showcase Plisetskaya's dramatic range, deliberately moving away from traditional orchestral arrangements to create a leaner, more percussive soundscape that mirrored the intensity of her choreography.
The recording released on the Melodiya label, catalog number 33 С01659-60, captures the essence of this collaboration. It was produced during a period when Soviet music was increasingly experimenting with avant-garde textures while remaining grounded in classical motifs. Upon its release, the suite was praised for its bold departure from Bizet's original orchestration, eventually becoming one of the most widely recognized and frequently performed pieces of twentieth-century Russian concert music.
