Where it came from
Released in 1973 by Decca, this recording of Christmas chants performed by the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes captures the Monastic tradition of plainchant. The monks of Solesmes are world-renowned for their preservation and scholarly restoration of Gregorian chant, a tradition that saw a significant resurgence in public interest throughout the mid-20th century. This specific release served to bring these meditative, liturgical vocal arrangements to a broader audience during the holiday season.
The aesthetic and production values of these Decca pressings were designed to emphasize the acoustic integrity of the Abbey’s architecture. By capturing the natural resonance of the monastic space, the production team aimed to transport the listener into the contemplative environment of the service itself. Upon its release, the recording was well-received by liturgical music enthusiasts and audiophiles alike, becoming a standard reference for the beauty and stylistic precision of the Solesmes school.
