Chant Grégorien - Chants de Noël

The recordings by the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes are foundational to the study and preservation of Gregorian chant in the twentieth century. Produced by Decca in collaboration with the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France, these sessions aimed to capture the authentic, monophonic purity of liturgical singing that the abbey had been meticulously documenting since the late 19th century through the work of Dom André Mocquereau.

The Chants de Noël collection represents a specific seasonal subset of the larger Solesmes discography. The aesthetic of the design and performance focuses on the rhythmic fluidity and contemplative nature of the chant, eschewing contemporary harmonic ornamentation to honor historical tradition. These recordings were received by the global music community as definitive scholarly references for the interpretation of Western plainchant, bridging the gap between monastic ritual and the broader classical recording market.
