Chant Grégorien - Kyriale (Messe VIII « De Angelis »)

The 1971 Decca release of the Kyriale, specifically the Mass VIII 'De Angelis', represents a landmark effort by the Monks of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. Solesmes has long been the global authority on Gregorian chant, having spent decades during the early 20th century recovering the authentic melodic lines of the early medieval liturgy. This recording was produced to preserve the monastic tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, capturing the stark, monophonic beauty of the plainsong that defined the abbey’s daily devotional life.

Dom Joseph Gajard, who served as choirmaster for over forty years, was instrumental in shaping the rhythmic nuances of this performance, prioritizing a fluid, speech-like delivery over rigid modern time signatures. Decca’s involvement provided the technical fidelity required to capture the natural reverberation of the abbey's stone architecture. Upon release, the record was received as a definitive reference for liturgical music scholars and those seeking a contemplative, meditative listening experience, maintaining its status as a foundational document in the history of chant recordings.
