Chant Grégorien: Fêtes De La Sainte Vierge

Released in 1958 under the Decca label, this recording of Gregorian chant is a hallmark of the Solesmes tradition. It features the Choir of Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, a central figure in the early 20th-century restoration of authentic plainchant performance. The abbey is world-renowned for its rigorous scholarly work and preservation of liturgical music, aiming to capture the monophonic, modal beauty of centuries-old vocal tradition through a modern medium.

The recording captures the meditative and liturgical focus characteristic of the Solesmes style, which prioritizes a fluid, speech-like rhythm derived from the original Latin text. Dom Joseph Gajard was instrumental in refining the choir's sound to reflect the rhythmic theories developed at the monastery. The album was received as an authoritative benchmark for sacred music, widely respected by both musicologists and the general public for its technical clarity and spiritual atmosphere during the mid-century rise of high-fidelity religious recordings.
