Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Decca label, this recording of Gregorian chant is a hallmark of the Solesmes Abbey's efforts to document and preserve the traditional liturgy of the Catholic Church. The monks of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes are world-renowned for their academic and musical dedication to the restoration of plainchant, a project that spans over a century of scholarship focused on the rhythmic and melodic nuances of the medieval period.
The album was directed by Dom Jean Claire, a significant figure in the abbey’s musical history who succeeded the influential Dom Joseph Gajard. The recording serves as a solemn musical interpretation of liturgical prayers suited for periods of distress, reflecting the monastic commitment to providing meditative, rhythmic, and monophonic textures that emphasize the text of the Roman Rite rather than modern orchestral arrangement.
