Chant Grégorien - Quelques Hymnes Usuelles

Released in 1969 by Decca under catalog number 461.008 M, this recording represents a quintessential document of the Solesmes tradition. The Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes, directed by Dom Joseph Gajard, was instrumental in the 20th-century revival and standardization of Gregorian chant. These recordings were crafted to capture the authentic, ethereal monophony of the Benedictine liturgy, emphasizing a fluid, oratorical rhythm that the monks believed mirrored the natural inflection of the Latin text.

Dom Joseph Gajard was a pivotal figure in liturgical musicology, having served as the choirmaster at Solesmes for over four decades. His approach to these hymns was deeply rooted in the rhythmic theories developed by his predecessors, which prioritize the aesthetic and spiritual qualities of the chant over strict metrical regularity. Upon release, this series was highly regarded by both music scholars and the monastic community for its technical precision and its role in preserving a meditative, centuries-old tradition within the modern recording medium.
