Chant Grégorien - Purification De La Sainte Vierge / Notre Dame Des Sept Douleurs

This recording captures the monastic liturgical tradition of the Benedictine nuns of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Argentan in Normandy. The choir, under the long-standing musical direction of Dom Joseph Gajard of Solesmes, recorded this selection as part of a series intended to document the authentic performance of Gregorian chant, which had seen a significant resurgence in the mid-20th century following the liturgical reforms and the scholarly work of the Solesmes Abbey.

Released on the IPG label, the disc represents the rigorous focus on monophonic purity and rhythmic interpretation championed by Dom Gajard. The production aimed to preserve the meditative, prayerful atmosphere of the abbey’s daily office. These recordings were generally received by the liturgical community and music historians as vital reference material for the interpretation of the Graduale Romanum, emphasizing the importance of the neumatic tradition over later, more ornate harmonic developments.
