Where it came from
Produced in 1966 by Disques Decca, this recording of Good Friday Gregorian chant features the Monks of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes Abbey under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. The Solesmes Abbey had long been the epicenter of the early 20th-century movement to restore authentic plainchant, and this release serves as a liturgical document of their disciplined, rhythmically fluid interpretation that defined the 'Solesmes style' for the global Catholic church.
Dom Joseph Gajard served as the choirmaster at Solesmes for over four decades, dedicating his life to researching medieval manuscripts to ensure the chant was performed with historical fidelity. This specific pressing was designed to bring the atmospheric, monastic experience of the Good Friday liturgy into a domestic setting, and it was widely praised during its era for its technical recording quality and the ethereal, meditative vocal precision of the Benedictine choir.
