Chant Grégorien

Recorded in 1961 by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, this release represents a pivotal moment in the preservation of liturgical music. The Solesmes monks were world-renowned for their scholarly research into the rhythmic interpretation of Gregorian chant, aiming to restore the purity of these melodies by stripping away later accretions. The Decca sessions were engineered to capture the distinct acoustics of the abbey, emphasizing the monophonic clarity and meditative quality that defined the Solesmes school of musical prayer.

The album serves as a definitive document of the liturgical tradition, released during a period when the Roman Catholic Church was undergoing the significant shifts of the Second Vatican Council. Dom Joseph Gajard, serving as the choir master for decades, spent his career refining the choir’s technique, which prioritize a fluid, speech-like phrasing rather than a strictly metered performance. Critically received as a benchmark for authenticity, the recording remains a cornerstone for scholars and enthusiasts of Western sacred music who seek an authoritative example of the Solesmes methodology.
